Asking five tradies for a price does not give five tradies your number

Asking for a price releases nothing. You can ask one tradie or every tradie on your list, and not one of them receives your phone number for having been asked. Your details are released when you decide to contact somebody — never before.

Why this is the whole point

Three prices should not cost you three cold callers. If asking for a quote handed over your number, then the sensible way to get comparable prices would be to hand your number to everybody — and you would spend the next fortnight explaining to five businesses that the job is done.

So asking is recorded, the tradie is notified, and the contact stays locked. One button, later, changes that, and only you can press it.

You can only ask tradies who matched your job

There is no cap on how many you ask, but you cannot ask a tradie who was not among your matches. “Everybody” therefore means everybody suitable, not everybody on the platform.

What a good note buys you

You can attach up to a thousand characters when you ask. Use them. “It’s the upstairs bathroom and there’s no side access” is the difference between a price and a guess, and it saves the visit that would otherwise be needed to find that out.

Silence is recorded too

A request nobody answers within three days is marked stale rather than deleted. You need to be able to see that you asked and got nothing back — that is a fact about that tradie, and quietly removing it would hide the most useful thing you learned.

Nothing here is an agreement

A price is information, not an offer waiting to be accepted. When you choose a tradie, what happens is a phone call — you both still have to agree what the work is and when it happens. We do not tell either of you that something has been “accepted”, because nothing has been.
